Encrypted Tax Return Password Information

The IRS requires that all tax returns sent via email must be encrypted (password protected) and the password must not be sent in the same email as the attachment. When you email a copy of the tax return to a taxpayer using Tax Hound. We include instructions for opening the attached pdf copy of the return. The instructions explain how the password was created to open the pdf.

Instructions for Opening the Attached pdf File
Click on the attachment provided with this email. When prompted for a password, please enter the password as instructed below:
1 – Enter the first 4 letters of primary taxpayer first name. If it is less than 4 letters use only available letters.
2 – Followed by the month, day and year of primary taxpayer date of birth in this format: MMDDYYYY .
3 – Followed by primary taxpayer Last 4 digits of SSN.

Examples
If the name of taxpayer is John Doe, the date of birth is 04/09/1983 and SSN is 400-00-1001 then the password will be ‘john040919831001’.

If the name of taxpayer is Ann Doe, the date of birth is 07/01/1986 and SSN is 400-00-1006 then the password will be ‘ann070119861006’.
